Welcome to Clay by Design, the studio name for the ceramic art by Alexandra Barto.

I create contemporary handmade ceramic vessels, specialising in moon jar-inspired forms with layered painterly surfaces. Each jar is an exploration of colour and texture, and each is a unique piece of tactile art.

My story in pictures
About
Clay by Design is a small studio pottery based near Farnham in Surrey, UK. Established in 2019, it has grown from humble beginnings to become a growing business with reach into local, regional and international markets.

I create one off pieces of tactile ceramic art, and you can purchase works through Lingwood Samuel Art in Godalming, Bell Fine Art in Winchester and White Chalk Gallery in Devizes, or by visiting me at one of my upcoming events.

Why am I a maker? There's something very special about clay. It is raw, elemental, and both the material and practice connects me to our creative ancestors. When soft clay is worked and then transformed into ceramic, the piece becomes a permanent object that contains the energy of the earth and maker combined. It is a wonderful thing to be part of.
